The drive to the Kalalau Lookout on Kauai was absolutely fantastic. About 18 miles of twisty fun with almost no traffic. The views along the way aren’t bad either. Here’s the route:

Wow, really wish I took this when I was there. I was a complete bum. Pretty sure I even stayed in Waimea.

I’ll have to drive that the next time I’m there. My wife and I honeymooned in Princeville and can't wait to revisit the island. Next time we might rent a Jeep instead of a Mustang convertible so we can go on some of the rougher roads.

dude, just get the mustang and the insurance. You’d be surprised how well rental cars handle all sorts of terrain! once when I was off roading a Malibu in the arizona desert we came upon a guy in a corvette who’s rear end was stuck on some rocks. My sense of bad assism dropped 14 points. we helped him rock it off and away he went along the trail on the side of a cliff! trust me the mustang would do just fine!

I dove that road in a 1987 dodge shadow, it was a sun faded island car. I had it in low coming back down for fear of roasting the brakes. Luckily in Kauai most folks drive slow.

Bookmarked for when we return to Hawaii!

What’s your count at for the times you’ve said “Let’s move here”?

Sounds like a good excuse to go back.

We were pretty adventurous in the Mustang, taking it on the beach and down an unpaved (or formerly paved) red dirt road to a beach that was between or through a plantation, but the ride and size of the rocks and ruts and realizing if we killed a tire we’d have to wrangle a spare on (if equipped) or have it towed, we turned around and went to Poipu a few hours earlier than planned.

For that particular road, we would have needed something with more sidewall and more suspension travel.

You won’t regret it.

I loved the island, but it’s way to isolated for me to want to live there. Wouldn’t mind a few months if I had the time...

I agree with this. Oahu was too busy for me. Lahaina was just right.
